# HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE CARAT OF A GEMSTONE?

The careless of diamonds is determined to set the appropriate price. The mass is calculated by weighing, according to the formula. Or the calculation table of the weight and diameter ratios. The last two methods are used when evaluating jewelry, but they give an error of up to 10%.

What is a carat diamond?

As we all know, a diamond belongs to the most expensive precious stone. It's a cut diamond. The name means "sparkling." To add shine and convey the play of color, jewelers make many faces on the nugget, round off the corners, or leave sharp.

In classic jewelry, the mineral looks from above after cutting:

round;

square;

rectangular;

oval;

triangular;

The careless is important for determining the value. Crumbs (dust) and small cut diamonds up to 0.3 mm are least valued. In them, the sparkle is hardly noticeable. Nuggets are large (from 1 carat) or medium (0.3-0.999 carats). They cost 15 times more than the same weight of small-caliber minerals. Their sparkling brilliance (brilliancy) is pronounced.

In 1907, the value of 1 ct was officially approved - 200 milligrams. The International Metric Committee has established that the size of a diamond and other precious stones is indicated in this unit of weight, and the rest of the gems are in grams.

How to determine how many carats are in a diamond (with a table)

Small round stones are made according to the standard 17 faces. It turns out to cut 19, 24, 49, 55-57 sides on medium-sized gemstone.

On large stones, the "royal" or "majestic" cut looks more advantageous. In the first version, there are 74 86 facets, and in the second – 102. The shape affects the severity of the sparkle and the size of the diamond in the product.

The exact weight is determined only by weighing. Calculation formulas, including the Tavernier rules, give an error of up to 10%. The tables show the values taking into account compliance with the standards of cutting. The size of a one-carat diamond in mm is 6.4. For stones of medium caliber D - less than 6.39 mm and lower - 0.99 ct. A processed 0.5-carat diamond corresponds to a diameter of 5.15 mm and a weight of 100 mg, and a 3 ct nugget has 9.44 mm.

Next, the actual mass of the stone (the ratio of the diameter to the group of 200 mg) is squared. The resulting figure is multiplied by the market value of 1 carat.

The approximate weight of a gemstone can be determined from the table by measuring its length and width. Now on sale, there are special devices such as calipers with software. The size of the gemstone's height, width, and feature (density) is used when measuring.
